Ethiopian army gunned down man because his phone rang during meeting, Amnesty says

An  Ethiopian  soldier gunned down a 32-year-old businessman during a security crackdown last year because his phone went off during a public meeting, Amnesty International revealed Friday. The shocking killing was carried out as  Ethiopia  was trying to suppress an armed uprising by the Oromo Liberation Army, which formed in a region where members of an ethnic group had been complaining they were being marginalized from political and economic power, the  BBC  reports. “During the meeting, one of the phones collected rang and the soldiers asked who the owner of the phone was,” Amnesty International  wrote in a report  about the August 2019 incident in the Oromia regional state, citing testimony from a witness. “Ariti Shununde responded saying that the phone belonged to him.” ETHIOPIA PRIME MINISTER WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE   “The EDF soldier ordered him to come to the front and he obeyed. Ethiopia unlocks one of the world's last closed telecoms markets

Image
For delivery man Sisay Alebachew, the difference between a good and bad day depends on Ethio Telecom, Ethiopia's monopoly telecoms provider. When the internet is down or too slow to use, customers struggle to place orders on the website of Deliver Addis, Sisay's e-commerce employer, meaning he has little to do. Other times, when the phone network is jammed, Sisay can't reach customers to complete deliveries -- he wastes precious time standing outside their homes, dialling in vain. Sisay is thrilled, then, that after years of build-up, change finally seems to be coming to Ethiopia's stunted telecoms sector, one of the last closed markets in the world. Last week the government regulator invited firms to submit "expressions of interest" for two new telecoms licences that would break up Ethio Telecom's monopoly. Officials also plan to sell a 40-percent stake in Ethio Telecom, a move they hope will make the firm more efficient. "For a business

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan to resume technical talks on GERD

Image
Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have agreed to resume the technical discussions on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Khartoum and Addis Ababa announced jointly on Thursday. The agreement came following virtual talks between Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Thursday. According to the official Sudanese news agency and Ethiopian news agency, the online meeting was attended by the foreign and irrigation ministers and intelligence chiefs of both countries. During the online session, Sudanese and Ethiopian officials agreed on the importance of resuming the talks to complete "the easy part left of the negotiations on the filing and operations of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam according to what was agreed in Washington." Abiy responded to "concerns raised by the Sudanese side; clarity was provided on environmental issues, dam safety and data exchange facilitation," according to a statement from the office

Ethiopia Says Elections Unlikely to Happen Before April

Ethiopia said it’s unlikely to hold elections before April due to logistical and budgetary constraints caused by the coronavirus outbreak. The electoral board, in a document on its Facebook account, outlined two scenarios, saying it will need either 10 months or 13 months to organize the vote, which was initially scheduled for August 29. The highly anticipated election is seen as a test of the popularity of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who rose to power almost two years ago following the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn. The board estimates that more than 50 million people in Africa’s second-most populous nation will vote, requiring 50,000 polling stations and 250,000 election officials. Earlier this month, Parliament voted to assess the constitution and establish how the government can avert potential instability caused by the delay.

Ethiopia Says to Continue With Plans to Fill Nile Dam

Image
Ethiopia has said it will continue with its plans to fill its $4 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) from July, despite Egypt's claim that the move could be lead to regional instability. In a letter to the UN Security Council on Monday, Ethiopia's Foreign Affairs Minister Gedu Andargachew said that Addis Ababa "does not have legal obligation" to seek Egypt's approval to fill GERD. Gedu was responding to Egypt's recent complaint to UNSC in which Cairo sought the intervention of the UN executive body to stop Ethiopia's plan to start filling what would be Africa's largest power dam. Egypt said Ethiopia's move to fill the dam before reaching a final agreement with riparian states "potentially poses a serious threat to peace and security throughout the region". "This [filling the dam] would jeopardise the water security, food security and indeed the very existence of over 100 million Egyptians who are entirely dependen

Khartoum — Prime Minister Dr. Abdullah Hamdouk held today a sphere meeting with the Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, with the participation of the ministers of foreign affairs, irrigation and intelligence chiefs of the two countries. The two sides asserted during the meeting the need for reaching a tripartite agreement that takes into account the interests of the three countries, and to continue negotiations on the basis agreed upon in the Washington track. UAE develops a rapid coronavirus laser testing technology

QuantLase Imaging Lab, the medical-research arm of the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange-listed International Holdings Company, IHC, announced that it has developed novel equipment which enables for much faster mass screenings, with test results available in seconds and allowing testing on a wider scale. The technology will reinforce the UAE’s position as a hub of research and innovation, as scientists around the world scramble to devise a faster method of testing for patients suspected to have been infected with the coronavirus and potentially identifying carriers before they become infectious. This break-through will enable ‘Mass-scale screening’, changing the whole dimension of tracing and the speed with which workforces can be approached. Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, expressed hope over the discovery saying: "We are always following innovations related to the early and rapid detection of COVID–19.
